The Lie I Bought in to: Part 3

Part 3 of 4

This is Omar.

Remember where we left off?

I was saying that my systems were finally working. The Hip Hop Championship was beginning to run like clockwork again—starting and finishing within minutes of published times.

My studio was reliable, teachers stayed, students stayed, and I could actually take time off without everything falling apart.

But here's what I couldn't shake: Why was I still so exhausted?

If I had the systems, if I had the team, if I could step away without everything collapsing… why did it still feel like the business was running me instead of me running it?

That's when I realized something. There are five problems every studio owner faces that no amount of systems, marketing tactics, or revenue strategies can fix.

THE FIVE THINGS

I call them the Five F’s: Freedom, Funds, Family/Friends, Fitness, and Faith (Purpose).

I know, I know. Another framework. But here’s the thing—these aren’t business tactics. They’re the five things your business is supposed to protect, not consume.

FAMILY/FRIENDS

“Dad, I remember you as always working.” That one still hurts.

I was at every event, every recital, every competition. But I wasn’t really there.

I was checking my phone, answering “quick” emails, mentally running through tomorrow’s schedule. My daughter was my best buddy when she was little, and she went everywhere with me. But everywhere I went was work.

Your family doesn’t just need you to show up. They need you to be present. Actually there, not half-distracted by what’s happening at the studio.

FITNESS

I was thinking, “I teach dance. But when’s the last time I actually danced for joy? Not to demonstrate, not to choreograph. Just… dance?” I couldn’t remember. And that’s the problem.

We teach wellness to our students while we’re running on caffeine and stress. I’m not just talking about hitting the gym. I’m talking about having the energy to do the things that matter, protecting your body so you can still move at 60, 70, 80. It’s not sacrificing your health for your business’s growth.

FAITH

I’m talking about what makes you, you. Your meditation practice, your creative outlet, your church, your connection to nature, your sense of purpose beyond the business.

For me, it’s those 10-day silent retreats. 100 hours of meditation. It’s one of the things that keep me grounded, connected to something bigger than quarterly revenue or student retention rates.

What’s yours? And when’s the last time your business protected it instead of crowding it out?

FUNDS

A lot of my stress was about money, and I started to realize what I was getting wrong in my business and why I was feeling so stressed.

I was constantly chasing some kind of way of getting more money—more students, more classes, more programs.

The thing is, at that point, I already had enough money, and what I really didn’t have was enough time to enjoy it. Even if I got more money, I would still be stressed.

I was realizing that making more money was simply not the problem, but making enough was.

Ideally, we’re talking about enough to protect the other four F’s—friends, family, fitness, and faith—enough for me to enjoy my life without the dance studio and the events consuming it.

The hardest part was figuring out exactly how much was enough and then stopping when I got to that point.

FREEDOM

I’m not talking about working from a laptop on the beach. I’m talking about having the choice to be wherever you’re needed most.

Remember that phone call I took at the championship? That wasn’t freedom. That was luck—an accident that worked once. Real freedom is building a business that runs without you—not for every single thing, but for the things that matter.

Like being able to say “yes” to your daughter’s science fair without checking if someone can cover your class, and without that knot in your stomach from wondering if everything’s falling apart while you’re gone.

WHAT I LEARNED THE HARD WAY

Most business advice focuses on two F’s: Freedom and Funds. And the solution is always the same—more sales, more marketing, more growth.

But growth without protecting the other three F’s? That’s just a faster path to burnout.

I know because I lived it. Through a business partnership ending, through losing my key people, through years of rebuilding, through watching my kids grow up with a dad who was “there” but not really there.

SO WHY DID I STOP?

If the systems were working, if the last four years were the best we’d ever had, if I’d finally figured it out after 20 years… why did I walk away from the UK Hip Hop Dance Championship?

That’s what I’ll share next time. Spoiler: it had everything to do with the Five F’s.

Which of the Five F’s is your business consuming right now instead of protecting? Hit reply and let me know. I read every response.

Be well,
Omar
